Leeds United bolstered their defensive ranks with the signing of commanding centre-half Tarik Muharemović, who has signed a five-year deal at Elland Road after making the switch from Italian outfit Sassuolo.
Standing at 6ft 4’ in frame, the 23-year-old arrives in West Yorkshire after a stellar season in Serie A and impressive FIFA World Cup campaign with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Below are eight facts and figures about our latest recruit...
Muharemović featured for his nation three times at this summer’s World Cup, helping guide Bosnia to their best ever finish in the tournament as they reached the Round of 32. Prior to that, Tarik had played the full 120 minutes in both Play-Offs where Zmajevi (The Dragons) overcame both Wales and Italy on penalties.
After putting pen to paper on a deal at Elland Road, the defender becomes the first ever Bosnian to represent Leeds United! Across the years, 65 different nationalities have featured for the club and now the Balkan country becomes the 29th UEFA member state to produce a Whites player.
Aged 21 at the time, Muharemović debuted for his national team in a friendly against England at St. James’ Park. Since then, he has gone on to earn 16 further caps, scoring a maiden international goal in a 2025 meeting with the country of his birth, Slovenia, where he came up against new teammate Jaka Bijol!
Tarik’s professional debut came as a second half substitute for first team Wolfsberger AC in the Austrian Bundesliga. Entering the action after the break against RB Salzburg, the left-sided defender lined up against Brenden Aaronson while fellow Whites forward Noah Okafor was an unused substitute.
Just six appearances for the Austrian side were enough to convince Italian giants Juventus to secure the services of the fledgling talent, who would then go on to feature 57 times for their Next Gen side in Serie C before an initial loan move to Sassuolo followed.
The centre-half’s upwards trajectory continued, playing a crucial part in the Neroverdi returning to the Italian top-flight as second division champions. He then helped the team to a fine 11th-place finish on their return to Serie A, featuring 33 times in all competitions across the 2025/26 season and scoring two towering headers from set pieces!
A rock at the back, Muharemović made the third most clearances across Serie A last season despite missing six games across the campaign. Using more data powered by Opta, the defender excelled in aerial duels, winning 64.4 per cent of those contested which was higher than any of his new teammates to have played a minimum of 900 minutes.
Football runs in the Muharemović blood! Tarik’s younger brother Kenan is also a professional footballer, currently on the books of Rapid Wien, featuring 16 times in the Austrian second tier for their reserve side last term. Now 20, the centre-half also came through the ranks with Tarik’s boyhood club Wolfsberger.
