EFL Trophy Preview: U21s take on League Two side Oldham Athletic

Scott Gardner’s side travel to Boundary Park.

Boundary Park - Oldham Athletic

Leeds United Under-21s visit Sky Bet League Two Oldham Athletic on Tuesday evening in their second EFL Trophy test of the season.

Scott Gardner’s side began their Group G campaign with a memorable 4-3 victory over Yorkshire rivals Barnsley at Oakwell, which included a hat-trick for Callum Mills.

The versatile midfielder became the youngest player in the competition’s history to claim the match ball, with Josh McDonald also on target for the Whites who raced into a four goal lead before the hosts threatened to mount a comeback late on.

United showed character and experience beyond their years to see the tie out until the full-time whistle sounded, in front of nearly 400 travelling supporters. Leeds sit second in the standings, level on points with Fleetwood Town and can reclaim top spot with a positive result over the Pennines.

Since the victory, Gardner’s team have picked up more senior experience with a hard-fought encounter at Tamworth in the National League Cup before cruising past Stockport County U21s in the Premier League Cup last weekend.

Oldham, meanwhile, also recorded a victory in their first match of the tournament, beating Fleetwood courtesy of a Noah Chilvers goal after the break. The Latics have however struggled for form in League Two, without a win since August which leaves them 21st in the table.

Action from Boundary Park gets underway at 7pm.
