United's reserve team signed off their campaign with a 1-0 win against Darlington on Tuesday night.

Academy youngster Chris Ovington ensured the season ended with a fourth win in five games when he headed home the only goal during the second period.

The game had a real end of season feel about it, and it was the enterprising visitors who were left counting the cost of missed chances and poor delivery.

Darlington wasted a couple of good opportunities from close range and paid the price in the second period when United scored with the best move of the game.

That came shortly after the hour-mark when Ovington stooped to head home following some great build-up play.

The lively Scott Gardner was on the end of some fine passing play and Ovington converted his cross with a well-placed header.

The goal lifted United and substitute Nathan Cartman, who replaced trialist Bradley Hudson, from Fulham, almost doubled the advantage moments later when he tried his luck from distance.

Daniel Riley went on to waste a late opportunity for Darlington and Ollie Hotchkiss rattled the bar in the final minute with a superb strike, but there was little else to excite the crowd as United held on for the win.

United: Edwards, Gardner, White (Fisher 85), Hotchkiss, Wilkinson, Milne, Sorsa, Delph, Constantine, Ovington, Hudson (Cartman 55). Subs: Falkingham, Jerome, Ross.
