ELDING AT DOUBLE
Anthony Elding scored twice for Leeds United reserves and returning international Jonathan Douglas completed the full 90 minutes against Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday night.
Elding's two goals weren't enough to secure victory after Enoch Showunmi, the Owls striker who rejected a move to Elland Road in January, struck twice for the home side, but Douglas took a major step on the recovery trail after completing his first full game since December.
The Republic of Ireland international showed no ill effects from his knee injury as he completed the game and, with United dominating the reserve encounter, the watching management team of Gary McAllister and Steve Staunton were left with plenty of food for thought.
The game didn't start well for Leeds, though, with Showunmi slamming home a 25-yard strike after just eight minutes, but Neil Thompson's side went on to take charge against a strong Wednesday outfit.
Trialist striker Georges Ba, the Ivory Coast international, and Seb Carole both went close before Paul Huntington headed a Peter Sweeney free-kick over the bar.
Ba also headed a Douglas free-kick over the top before half-time as United sought for an equaliser.
Elding was next to go close on 52 minutes when he headed an Alan Sheehan cross over the top, and Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Rob Birch made two terrific saves, one to deny Elding and the other to halt a screamer from Douglas.
But the equaliser finally came on 67 minutes when Sweeney won a penalty and Elding converted the spot-kick.
Moments later, Sweeney tried his luck from distance after good work by Seb Sorsa, but United were finally rewarded for their efforts when Huntington made a nuisance of himself and Elding converted from close range to make it 2-1.
That looked like game over, but the home side had the final word, moments from time, when Showunmi capitalised on a defensive mix-up to grab a late equaliser.
United: Lucas, Gardner (Darville 74), Sheehan, Douglas, Huntington, Wilkinson, Sorsa, Sweeney, Elding, Ba (Elliott 81), Carole (Delph 63).
