Oakwell

Danish striker Kim Christensen scored the only goal of the game to sink Leeds United reserves at Barnsley on Wednesday night.

Christensen headed home a Miguel Mostto cross midway through the second half to decide matters on a cold night at Oakwell.

The result, a third Pontin's League defeat of the season, was harsh on Neil Thompson's United side after they enjoyed some good spells of pressure and created some decent chances.

Tomi Ameobi went close after just two minutes of the contest and Nathan Cartman also went close early on after some good work by Simon Madden.

Gavin Rothery, who looked sharp throughout, also tested Barnsley goalkeeper Kyle Letheren, son of former Leeds stopper Glan, with a curling shot from 25 yards that drifted narrowly wide.

United finished the first half strongly and made a bright start to the second period, almost taking the lead just five minutes after the interval.

Ross Wilkinson rose well to meet a Fabian Delph corner, but the England youth international saw his header cleared off the line.

Delph and Cartman also had opportunities, but Barnsley should have snatched the lead when former Tottenham and Wolves star Rohan Ricketts wasted a good chance following a Mostto cross.

Moments later, the hosts did take the lead, though, courtesy of Christensen, and as Barnsley pressed in the closing stages, United were restricted to a couple of long range efforts as they looked to force a way back into the contest.

UNITED: Martin, Madden, Wilkinson, Lees, Fisher, Delph (Ovington 67), Hotchkiss, Bayly (Milnes 76), Cartman, Rothery, Ameobi (Connor 63). Subs: Edwards, Grace.
