Teenager Sam is a product of the club's Academy, who was thrust into contention during the summer of 2012.
Having signed a one-year professional deal earlier in the summer, Sam joined the senior squad and impressed enough at right-back to ensure he was an ever present during the pre-season campaign.
Sam even scored in the 3-1 win at Preston as he settled into life with the seniors, prompting manager Neil Warnock to say he had no problem with him playing competitive football with the first team.
An injury to Tom Lees saw Sam handed his debut against Shrewsbury Town in the Capital One Cup first round and he retained his place the following week to make his league debut against Wolves.
The following Monday, Sam signed a new three-year contract with the club.
