Robbie Blake's first goal of the season got United off to the perfect start in the Carling Cup second round clash with Barnet.
Blake latched onto a pass from Gary Kelly and capitalised on some abject defending to race clear on goal before tucking the ball beyond Barnet goalkeeper Ross Flitney to give United a seventh-minute lead in the tie.
United almost went further in front on 12 minutes when Hayden Foxe got up well to meet a Kelly free-kick, but the Aussie's header fizzed wide of the upright.
To their credit, Barnet took a more positive approach to the contest than United's first round opponents Chester, but they were still forced to keep men behind the ball as United dominated possession during the opening half-hour.
Blackwell's men continued to press for a second, and the goal they sought nearly came in unlikely fashion when Barnet's Nicky Bailey almost turned an Eddie Lewis cross into his own goal. From the resultant corner, Foxe headed a Lewis delivery wide of the mark.
United goalkeeper Neil Sullivan was handed his second start of the season and he was finally called into action five minutes before the break when he got down well to parry a Liam Hatch drive as the visitors mounted a rare attack. Two minutes later Geoff Horsfield went off with what was reported to be a tight hamstring and Ian Moore took his place.
The visitors sent on Tresor Kandol, scorer of the two goals by which Barnet beat Cardiff City in the first round, for the start of the second half here but it was United substitute Moore who got his name on the scoresheet to put United into a 2-0 lead after 55 minutes. It was Moore's first goal for Leeds since his signing from Burnley in March 2005.
Moore, looking lively, linked up well with Stone to build another attack on the right and when the ball was played in to Blake, he turned sharply to hit a shot which Flitney saved.
But United were quickly back on the attack and went three up in the 75th minute when Moore fired in from the edge of the box after Blake had controlled a long forward pass to put him in possession. With a 3-0 advantage, United sent on 18-year-old midfielder Jonathan Howson, Stone making way for him.
Barnet pulled a goal back in the 77th minute when substitute Magno Vieira, under pressure from Shaun Derry, forced the ball in following a corner.
