Leeds United returned to winning ways in an entertaining and open game with this hard-earned victory over League One side Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Although manager Kevin Blackwell regards friendly games as a means of getting his players match fit and in shape for the start of the Championship season, this victory, coming after successive defeats, at Scunthorpe and Hartlepool, was a welcome one.

Strikes from David Healy, Eirik Bakke and an own goal from Forest defender Wes Morgan provided United with the win.

American winger, Eddie Lewis, on duty with the USA in the World Cup, was back in the United side for his first game of the pre-season progamme and striker Ian Moore was given a place in the starting line-up, as was fellow striker David Healy and left-back Dan Harding.

Central defender Matthew Kilgallon began at the heart of the United defence alongside Paul Butler and Steve Stone was in midfield. United, who sold goalkeeper Ian Bennett to Sheffield United earlier in the week, had trialist keeper, Darren Ward, on the subs bench.

United got off to a great start, taking the lead inside three minutes. The move was neatly built by Ian Moore on the right who fed a pass to Steve Stone and the former Forest man played the ball to David Healy who knocked it home from close range.

A few minutes later, Forest moved forward at speed down the left and when the ball was crossed into the middle, Sammy Clingan found himself in space and unmarked on the edge of the penalty area but his shot was narrowly wide of the left hand post, much to Neil Sullivan's relief.

United conceded a couple of corners as Forest pushed forward but both were cleared without undue concern and when United  built an attacking move Moore and Healy combined well on the edge of the Forest penalty area before Healy's angled shot went wide.

Sullivan went down to his left to make a save from Nathan Tyson after Clingan had picked him out with a well placed forward pass and after another Forest corner, the United keeper did well to gather under pressure when Ian Breckin hit a shot from near the penalty spot.

Referee Shoebridge had words with Tyson and Sullivan when the two players had been involved in a heated argument but the official was content to leave it at that. But the referee had a quick word with Eirik Bakke soon afterwards when the Norwegian international brought down Tyson.

Forest, however, forced an equaliser just before the break with a scrambled goal from Tyson and the sides went in at half-time all square

The second half had hardly begun when United fell behind A well judged and flighted left wing cross from Julian Bennett found Grant Holt who headed powerfully into the United net from six yards. Just as at Scunthorpe in mid-week United had surrendered a lead but on this occasion, not for long.

When United were awarded a free kick just outside the Forest penalty area, Bakke stepped up to take it quickly and hammered a low shot into the Forest goal without anyone, including goalkeeper Paul Smith, moving to make matters all square again.

Substitute Jack Lester had a chance to put Forest ahead again when he shot wide from 14 yards and eight minutes from the end, another of Forest's substitutes, Neil Harris, had a great chance to put his side ahead but, after being put clear by Tyson, he fired straight at Sullivan.

United, however, clinched the victory eight minutes from the end when Bakke hit a shot  which Forest defender Wes Morgan deflected into his own net.
