RESERVES WIN
ROTHERHAM RES 0, UNITED RES 3 (Elding pen 42, Heath 72, Elliott 75)
A strong-looking United reserve side earned a 3-0 victory over Rotherham United's second string in a Pontin's Holidays League East away fixture on Wednesday afternoon.
A goal just before half time and two late on in the second half secured the win.
United, who gave a trial to striker Paul Dalglish, who played up front alongside Anthony Elding, were in control for most of the game and restricted the home side to just one real scoring opportunity.
Elding had the ball in the back of Rotherham's net in the sixth minute only to have the effort ruled out for offside while Dalglish almost curled a right foot cross into the top corner a minute later.
Dalglish beat the offside trap to run onto a pass from Simon Madden after eight minutes, but fired his shot over the bar as did Elding after half-an-hour but in the 42nd minute United's pressure told.
Matt Heath was pulled down by Mark Joseph as he went to head a cross from Ian Westlake and Elding put United one up from the penalty spot, sending the keeper the wrong way as he fired into the bottom right hand corner.
Rotherham had a good opportunity to equalise in the 52nd minute when Mark Newshan broke through on goal but Alan Martin came out of his goal well and blocked the shot.
United increased their lead after 72 minutes when Heath made a good run to the near post to head in Sebastien Carole's corner from the left.
The victory was sealed in the 75th minute when Tom Elliott, who had come on only a minute earlier as substitute for Elding, headed in from six yards after Carole had exchanged passes with Oliver Hotchkiss from a corner kick before crossing into the middle.
United: Martin, Madden, Parker, Westlake (Delph 81), Huntington, Heath, Sorsa, Weston (Hotchkiss 74), Elding (Elliott 74), Dalglish, Carole. Subs not used: Fisher, Grace.
