MARINERS SUNK
Curtis Weston and Tom Elliott scored two goals apiece as United reserves cruised to a 4-1 victory at Grimsby Town on Wednesday night.
Two goals in each half accounted for a strong Mariners side to ensure Neil Thompson's men a victorious ending to 2007.
It took just four minutes for Weston to start the rout and United, lead by skipper Ben Parker and driven forward by the lively Ollie Hotchkiss, always looked the better of the two sides.
The opening goal, a good individual effort from the former Millwall youngster, was cancelled out by Grimsby's James Hunt midway through the first half.
United also lost Filipe Da Costa through injury on the half-hour - he was replaced by Chris Fisher - but after Elliott headed home a Hotchkiss corner three minutes before the break the result was never in doubt.
Two goals in the space of four second half minutes sealed the win, and Weston and Elliott alternated between provider and scorer.
Weston created Elliott's second of the night, the striker finishing well after good work by the midfielder, and the complement was returned when Weston finished off after Elliott won the ball with a strong tackle.
It was the reserves first victory for almost six weeks and manager Dennis Wise will be able to take plenty of positives from the contest ahead of the busy festive period.
Reserve team manager Neil Thompson was also delighted to see his side finally rewarded for another strong effort.
United: Lund, Madden, Parker, Grace (Milne 74), Wilkinson, Weston, Ovington (Darville 66), Hotchkiss, Delph, Da Costa (Fisher 30), Elliott.
