DENIED LATE ON
United's reserves were denied all three points at Scunthorpe on Wednesday night after a late equaliser from Iron striker Daniel McBreen.
The second string had enjoyed the better of the contest, twice taking the lead, but McBreen stooped to head home with eight minutes to go to ensure honours ended even at 2-2.
Alan Thompson and Shaun Derry both completed 90 minutes for United, and the duo were influential in Neil Thompson's side controlling the game.
Thompson played in Gavin Rothery for the opening goal on 23 minutes, but the young striker still delivered a terrific curling finish which left Scunthorpe goalkeeper Josh Lillis with no chance.
The home side were level before half-time, though, when United failed to deal with a corner and former Bradford City youngster Simon Ainge headed home at the back post.
United enjoyed the better of the second period and after a Tomi Ameobi cross proved just too powerful for Rothery to place his header, Thompson went close went he sent a stinging drive over the top.
That domination looked like paying off on 68 minutes when Ainge headed a Rob Bayly ball over the top back towards his own goal and Ameobi showed good awareness to capitalise and make it 2-1 to United.
But there was one last sting in the tail and McBreen ensured Scunthorpe had the last word when he bagged the equaliser on 82 minutes.
United: Edwards, Darville, Lees, Wilkinson, Fisher, Weston, Derry, Thompson, Bayly, Rothery (Cartman 82), Ameobi. Subs: Hotchkiss, Delph.
