Elland Road

The reserves picked up their first win of the season on Wednesday - thanks to yet another last-minute winner.

It was central defender Tom Lees who kept up the theme of late goals when he headed home a free-kick in the first minute of stoppage time to secure a 3-2 win against Rotherham United at Elland Road.

Once again it was a young United side who took to the field with skipper Rob Bayly and striker Tomi Ameobi the only players with senior experience, but after coming from behind twice, the lads clinched the points at the death.

Zeph Thomas had given Rotherham the lead after 14 minutes when he showed a cool head to fire past Matty Edwards after being given time and space.

The game opened up more after the early strike and United came close after a Rotherham defender turned the ball goalwards.

Gavin Rothery also stabbed a shot across the face goal after some good build-up as United looked to get back into the game.

A first penalty appeal was waved away when Chris Ovington took a tumble after a good spell of pressure, but the equaliser finally came on the half-hour mark when Ollie Hotchkiss delivered a terrific strike which hit the inside of the post before crossing the line.

The visitors were back in front before the interval, though. Sam Duncum converted from close range after a blocked Tom Cahill shot fell nicely at his feet.

The lively Rothery almost pulled one back at the start of the second half for United when he tried his luck from distance with a shot which went inches over the top.

Moments later, Rothery did find the net when he curled the ball beyond the reach of Mark Oxley to make it 2-2 on 55 minutes.

A double change saw the introduction of Tom Elliott and Nathan Cartman as United looked to secure a first win of the season during the closing stages.

But it was the visitors who forced United goalkeeper Edwards into making a good save when he tipped a Simon Harrison free-kick over the bar.

The impressive Ovington immediately won a free-kick at the other end, when his mazy run was halted by a trip on the edge of the box, but Rothery curled it over the top.

And United should have had a penalty in the 82nd m inute when substitute Cartman appeared to be brough down in the box as he shaped to shoot.

United pushed in the closing stages and were finally rewarded in the first minute of stoppage time.

Hotchkiss sent in a free-kick from the left, and central defender Lees planted his header beyond Oxley to secure the points.
