Turf Moor

United resumed the pre-season campaign on English soil and boss Dennis Wise went with what is proving to be his favoured line-up so far.

Scott Loach was given the nod to start in goal, Matt Heath and Rui Marques were the central defenders, David Prutton and Alan Thompson continued in midfield, and Tresor Kandol was named alongside Jermaine Beckford in the front-line.

Striker Richard Cresswell was also named among the substitutes.

Burnley also went with a strong side, although former United striker Robbie Blake was missing through injury.

Once again there was a superb turn-out of United supporters, similar in number to that which travelled to Turf Moor for the league fixture last November.

That vocal support rang around Turf Moor, and United keeper Scott Loach, situated in front of the away end, pulled off an early save to deny Northern Ireland international Kyle Lafferty with a shot from distance.

Home goalkeeper Gabor KIraly also made a good early save from Beckford, and moments later, Kiraly could only watch as Kandol slid a shot wide after beating the offside trap.

But Burnley were handed an opportunity in the 15th minute when Heath was adjudged to have handled a cross, despite no real claims from the Burnley camp.

Former United striker Andy Gray stepped up and, despite the best efforts of Loach, who got a hand to the ball, the shot crept inside the post.

United almost responded after some good work by Beckford and Prutton, on the right hand side of the midfield, unleashed a strike from distance straight at Kiraly. Thompson also tried a chip from distance, but the back-pedalling Kiraly watched the ball drift wide.

On the half-hour, United lost Eddie Lewis, who was replaced by Ben Parker after limping off with what appeared to be an ankle injury.

Chances followed at both ends, Loach making a good block for United, and Kiraly collecting a Thompson free-kick, but it was the United fans who were almost celebrating in the 37th minute.

An angled cross-cum shot from Beckford floated over a stranded Kiraly, but as the ball curled onto the post, it bounced back into play and was hacked to safety.

Skipper Thompson also tried his luck with another curling free-kick, but the ball flew wide of the mark.

And moments before half-time, Beckford sent a volley from distance flying wide of the mark.

Burnley made a number of changes at half-time, and they had the first opportunity of the second half when Ade Akinbiyi squeezed a shot across the face of goal.

At the other end, Kandol was denied by Brian Jensen twice in as many minutes as United continued to create chances.

But for all the openings created, Wise's men found themselves further behind eight minutes into the second half when Wade Elliott played in a low cross behind the United defence and Akinbiyi converted from close range.

Wise's first substitution was to introduce Fabian Delph in place of Ian Westlake on 58 minutes, and the youngster tested Jensen almost immediately with a sweet strike.

With 20 minutes remaining, Wise re-shuffled the remainder of his midfield with Jonny Howson, Curtis Weston, and Seb Carole all entering the fray.

But it was the intelligent touch of Delph that created another good opening for Kandol. Once again, Jensen proved equal to his finish.
