The planned tour of Germany took a diversion to the Czech Republic after the hastily arranged friendly clash with Slovan Liberec, following the short-notice cancellation of the pre-arranged fixture with Dynamo Dresden.

A sizeable number of fans re-arranged their plans to make the trip - the club organised one coach for 50 fans from Dresden - and they were treated to the unusual scenario of a tidy, modern stadium, overlooked by mountains, trees, and high-rises, and with the main stand built into a rock face.

The travelling faithful were also given a first glimpse of trialist centre back Akloul Mouloud while there were starting places for Curtis Weston, Leon Constantine, and goalkeeper Nick Hamman.

Hamman got his first touch in the third minute when Jiri Bilek tried his luck from distance with a low effort which took a bobble in front of the United keeper. Moments later, though, Hamman could only watch as a Jan Nezmar header bounced back off the bar as the hosts, who finished fourth in the Czech League last season and are fresh from Inter-toto football, looked to play the ball around.

But it was United, backed by a noisy following, who almost forced an opening in the seventh minute. Jonny Howson found Constantine with a delightful ball, but his cross was just too far in front of the onrushing Jermaine Beckford.

Beckford did get a sight on goal shortly before the quarter-hour when his effort beat home goalkeeper Zbynek Hauzr, but drifted agonisingly wide of the upright. Full of confidence, the striker again tried his luck from distance, but Hauzr was equal to the shot.

Indeed, United could be pleased with their efforts during the opening half-hour against a team who are well fancied to challenge the Prague teams in the Czech League this time around.

And they almost had something to show for those efforts on 32 minutes, but Beckford was denied from close range after intelligent play by Howson.

Five minutes later it took some good defending Matt Heath to deny Leberec's Nezmar with a great block after a Hamman clearance fell short and was returned into the box.

Right on the stroke of half-time, though, Beckford fashioned another opening at the other end, but a reaching Constantine couldn't quite apply the finishing touch.

Constantine also came within a whisker of bagging his first goal for the club at the start of the second period after Ian Westlake crossed from the left.

When United threatened again home goalkeeper Hauzr reacted well to cut out a Kandol header when Constantine was well-placed to convert.

The best chance so far fell to Constantine on 55 minutes when, after some great build-up play involving Westlake and Curtis Weston, Hauzr could only parry a low drive from Jonny Howson, but the former Port Vale striker put the rebound over the top.

It was a good opening to the second period by a United side who showed plenty of enterprise when pushing forward.

But it was the visitors who broke the deadlock on 66 minutes when Jiri Liska escaped down the left and Bejbl Radek latched on to the low cross to knock the ball home from close range.

Leeds should have been level within a minute though. Carole was given space on the right and he played in a delightful cross for Tresor Kandol, but the striker lifted the ball over the bar from close range.

With 14 minutes remaining, Kandol was denied by Hauzr, who spread himself well, and that proved to be the final chance as the game petered out to a conclusion.
