United boss Dennis Wise again opted to make full advantage of his squad by naming 22 players for the clash at a soggy Kit Kat Crescent.
Trialist Curtis Weston made his first start for the club, former Port Vale striker Leon Constantine started up front in the first half, and goalkeeper Danny Gay was again in the starting line-up.
And Gay was almost called into action inside the first minute when York swung a free-kick into the box, and the header grazed the top of the bar.
Behind Gay's goal, the travelling United fans were packed in and their vast presence made for a good atmosphere with plenty of vocal backing.
United's first real opportunity came shortly before the quarter-hour when Weston played a precision ball through to Constantine, but the striker was denied by an offside flag.
The home side created another decent chance, though, when Paul Brayson wasted a good header.
It took United a while to adapt to the conditions, but an onrushing Jonathan Douglas almost profited from some neat passing play, involving Jonny Howson and Constantine.
Weston also did well shortly before half-time when he escaped down the left before delivering a low cross which York had to scramble clear.
The best chance of the opening period fell to Tom Elliott, though. Ian Westlake did well down the left to feed an unmarked Elliott, but the youngster's shot was deflected to safety by David McGurk.
Wise again made wholesale changes at half-time, handing Jermaine Beckford his first of the season, along with trialist goalkeeper Nick Hammann, and young defender Simon Madden.
York again started brightly, and Hammann made one early save when Joe Brown drilled in a shot from a tight angle. Hammann made another good save moments later when he pushed a Chris Beardsley effort around the post.
At the other end, Prutton was looking a threat with a some neat distribution and Seb Carole headed wide, following an Eddie Lewis cross, before Beckford lashed a shot wide of the target.
Beckford also tried his luck from distance, testing York's substitute goalkeeper Adam Bartlett with a low, skidding shot.
And the striker, who spent much of last season on loan at Scunthorpe, should have put Leeds ahead on 74 minutes but after fashioning an opening on the edge of the box his finish was wide of the mark.
Beckford tested Bartlett again in the closing minutes, shooting low after a great ball forward from Russell Fry, but it wasn't enough to break the deadlock and honours ended even.
