Tom Elliott in action against York City

A Tom Elliott goal proved enough to see off Darlington in the first round of the FA Youth Cup on Wednesday.

Tom headed home the winner early in the second half to set up a second round meeting with Walsall.

But the 1-0 victory was marred by injury to striker Stefan Connor, who suffered a double fracture of his ankle after just 20 minutes of the game.

Academy boss Neil Thompson said: "We were pleased to win the game, but it was disappointing about Stefan. Full credit to the lads for going on to win it.

"We played some good football, kept our concentration levels high, and won the game, although we could have been a bit more ruthless.

"It was great experience for the lads going to a different stadium and the occasion of a Youth Cup tie tests them in a different way.

"But we passed it well and restricted them to next to nothing in terms of chances."

A date has yet to be confirmed for the second round clash at Walsall's Bescot Stadium.
