Dennis Wise handed full debuts to Leon Constantine and Filipe Da Costa for the visit of Bury while Mark De Vries made his 'second' debut after re-joining on loan and Simon Madden came in at right back for his first senior start.

Elland Road

And it turned out to be a dream start for Constantine when the former Port Vale striker latched onto ball over the top to score his first goal for the club after just eight minutes.

The striker, who has been sidelined with an ankle injury sustained in pre-season, showed good composure to hold off a defender before delivering a terrific finish to announce his Elland Road arrival in style.

De Vries almost got in on the act on 14 minutes when he forced Bury keeper Robert Provett into making a good save low down to his left.

But, despite dominating the opening exchanges, United were back on level terms in the 25th minute. Ben Futcher rose well to head home a Brian Barry-Murphy corner and, despite a the best efforts of David Prutton, the ball was adjudged to have crossed the line.

United responded immediately and after Jonny Howson fired over, Provett managed to hold a Da Costa drive at the second attempt.

But the goal also lifted Bury and Barry-Murphy forced Dave Lucas into making a good save when, after escaping the clutches of Madden, he tried his luck with a powerful shot.

On a confidence roll, enterprising Bury got their noses in front moments later when the United defence failed to clear a Barry-Murphy corner and Andy Bishop hammered the ball home.

To make matters worse for United, Da Costa received his marching orders four minutes before the interval. The midfielder was handed a straight red card following a challenge on Paul Scott.

Moments later Prutton was booked after a challenge on David Buchanan. The yellow was his fifth of the season and he will now miss the FA Cup replay against Hereford.

In the final minute of the half, De Vries headed wide of the mark after working himself an opening.

At half-time, Wise made a change when he introduced Jonathan Douglas in place of Prutton.

Ben Parker had an early effort for United at the start of the second period and De Vries had a shot deflected wide on 58 minutes as United looked for an equaliser.

De Vries had another chance on the hour-mark when he latched onto a long ball forward, but after escaping the attentions of Futcher the Dutchman screwed his shot wide. Moments later he went close again when he shot on the turn, but lifted the ball over the bar.

On 66 minutes Wise strengthened his attacking options with the introduction of Tresor Kandol and the substitute almost made an immediate impact. First he was denied by Bury keeper Provett and then he headed wide at the far post.

United reverted to a 4-2-3 formation and Douglas was next to go close when he tried his luck from distance with a shot that flew inches over the top.

Provett was tested again in the Bury goal on 75 minutes when he got down well to turn away a Madden and moments later he made a good block to deny Paul Huntington with a powerful strike.

With 14 minutes remaining Wise made his final change when Matt Heath replaced the tiring De Vries in the front-line.

United keeper Lucas was called into action for the first time in the second when he spread himself well to deny Nicky Adams after a quick-break, but the home side responded immediately and Kandol felt he had a good penalty shout waved away.

Wise's men continued to press and Heath had a header from close range blocked as the clock started to tick down.

The onslaught continued into stoppage time and Douglas landed himself a fifth booking of the season for protesting over a decision. He will also miss the FA Cup clash with Hereford.

But United were unable to force a goal, and Bury became the first team to win at Elland Road since Sheffield Wednesday secured a 3-2 victory eight months ago.
