United boss Dennis Wise welcomed Andrew Hughes back from injury to replace Ian Westlake (toe) at the heart of the midfield, and Leon Constantine was named among the subs for the first time, following his recovery from an ankle injury.

The full-house signs were up for a game which had clearly captured the imagination of the Cumbrians, and roared on by their biggest crowd since 1976, the hosts had an early shot deflected wide as they looked to make a bright start.

Carlisle United

But it was United who almost snatched the lead on the fifth minute. With goalkeeper Keiren Westwood in no-mans land, a back-tracking Peter Murphy had to be alert to head a Seb Carole shot from under his own bar..

On 11 minutes, it was Westwood who made a terrific save when he pushed a Jonathan Douglas effort over the top.

And the home goalkeeper had to be alert again moments later when he parried the ball after Jermaine Beckford turned a Jamie Clapham shot towards goal.

Carlisle did start to show a little more life as the half progressed, but it was United who took the lead in the 28th minute. A Douglas shot wasn't properly cleared by Danny Livesey and Beckford was handed an easy tap in for his eighth goal of the season.

The goal was no more than United deserved such was their superiority in the contest, and Wise's men literally coasted towards the half-time whistle with Carlisle offering no threat.

Beckford even went close to adding a second in stoppage time when he sent a dipping shot narrowly over the top from 20 yards out, and Dave Prutton was also denied by Westwood.

United also forced the first opening of the second half when, after Tresor Kandol took advantage of some sloppy defending, Carole fired straight at goalkeeper Westwood.

As the game reached the hour-mark the home side finally livened up, and they struck an equaliser on 61 minutes. Simon Hackney unleashed a powerful shot from distance, and Casper Ankergren was left with no chance.

The goal lifted the local support and nine minutes later the home side turned the scoreline around when Joe Garner headed home a corner.

With 14 minutes remaining,  Wise introduced Constantine for his first appearance, in place of Prutton, and also brought on Filipe Da Costa for Carole.

But Carlisle defender solidly after the taking the lead and United struggled to find a way through.

Da Costa did fire wide in the final moments and United stepped up their efforts for one last push in the four minutes of added on time.

It wasn't enough though and Carlisle ended United's hopes when Marc Bridge-Wilkinson scored the third goal following a corner deep in stoppage time.

It was enough to send United spinning to first defeat of the season as the gallant 13-game unbeaten run came to an end.
