United boss Dennis Wise handed debuts to loan strikers Mark De Vries and Wayne Andrews as he looked for his side to return to winning ways after Saturday's draw at Gillingham.

Wise also welcomed skipper Alan Thompson back to the fold, Andrew Hughes reverting to left-back with Jamie Clapham dropping down to the bench.

The Oldham side, managed by Elland Road favourite John Sheridan, included two former United players with Sean Gregan skippering the team and Michael Ricketts playing up front.

There were early touches for De Vries, who held the ball up, and Andrews, who won a free-kick on the edge of the box after escaping the clutches of Gregan .

It was big De Vries who had the first shot on goal in the eighth minute after a good ball forward from Thompson, but the loan man scuffed his effort after showing good skill to work himself an opening.

There was a scare for United in the 18th minute when Andy Liddell escaped down the right and dummied his way past an advancing Casper Ankergren, but by the time the Leeds-based marksman shaped to shoot there were three defenders on the line, and his effort was comfortably cleared Matt Heath.

Chris Taylor also managed a shot for Oldham before the half-hour mark, but the game lacked any real fluency and it was a scrappy opening.

And on the stroke of half-time, United loan man Andrews managed to force himself an opening, showing good pace, but his shot was over the top.

United also had the first raid of the second period when Andrews fired in a cross from the left, but the ball eluded David Prutton, who arrived untracked at the far post.

De Vries also had a shot blocked as Leeds threatened again on 52 minutes, and moments later an Alan Thompson free-kick was hacked away by the Oldham defence.

But the best opportunity came on 70 minutes when Oldham goalkeeper Mark Crossley reacted well to palm a Prutton header over the top after a good delivery by Seb Carole.

Oldham also had a great chance four minutes later when former United striker Ricketts headed wide from close range.

At the other end, Andrews tested Crossley again after Matt Heath won the ball with a great challenge, and United looked the most likely of the two sides to break the deadlock.

But just as it looked like being one of those nights the never-say-die spirit shone through again.

With the final attack of the game, in the fourth minute of stoppage time, substitute Ian Westlake arrived to volley home with an amazing strike.

It was another terrific finish to a game and was just rewards for a United side who stuck to their task throughout.
