The United starting line-up included three home debutantes with Tore Andre Flo, Alan Thompson, and Armando Sa all making their first starts at Elland Road.
And it took less than three minutes for Flo, pictured, to make his mark when he headed home a Robbie Elliott cross to give United a quick-fire lead.
While Flo was the immediate hero, a familiar duo had both come within a whisker of opening the scoring before the Norwegian capitalised.
Albion keeper Russell Hoult raced off his line to deny Eddie Lewis with a good opportunity and when the ball fell kindly to David Healy, Baggies defender Curtis Davies cleared off the line.
But the lead lasted barely three minutes. A Neil Clement free-kick was deflected to Jonathan Greening, pictured below, and the former York City youngster composed himself well before tucking the ball beyond the reach of Neil Sullivan.
And the visitors had turned the scoreline around by the 19th minute when Diomansy Kamara made it 2-1, pictured bottom. Kamara got the better of Hayden Foxe on the edge of the box before delivering a well-placed shot past Sullivan.
The game continued at a frenetic pace with both sides looking dangerous on the break. Healy had a couple of attempts blocked for United while West Brom were a threat at set-pieces.
Armando Sa also reacted well to avert the danger after a low Baggies cross was allowed to creep along the goalline.
But it was 3-1 on the stroke of half-time when Kamara, seemingly in an harmless position near the touchline, tried his luck with a curling effort which left Sullivan with no chance. It was Kamara's fourth goal against United this term.
Ideally, United needed an early lift in this second half and though they had a spell of pressure, Albion's defence held and when play switched to the other end, Sullivan had to get down quickly to make a save from Zoltan Gera.
United had a lot to make up and manager Wise made a double substitution after 57 minutes, bringing on strikers Tresor Kandol and Ian Moore for Robbie Elliott and Robbie Blake. Kandol was quickly involved with a run on the right but his low shot went across the face of the goal.
However, in the 66th minute United gave themselves a fighting chance of salvaging something from this game when free-kick specialist Thompson struck home the sweetest of free kicks from 25 yards after Kandol had been fouled.
Albion continued to look dangerous on attack, though, and Sullivan was called on to make saves from, first, Phillips and then Greening.
Yet, United mounted another spell of pressure, with Lewis and Healy to the fore, but again the Albion defence held. Referee Swarbrick waved away penalty appeals when Healy went down in the box.
