United caretaker boss, John Carver set his side up in an attacking 4-3 -3 with the on loan winger, Adam Johnson retaining his place in a more advanced position on the left. Whilst Ian Westlake, Jonathon Douglas and Shaun Derry made up the midfield trio.
Robbie Blake replaced David Healy up front to partner Richard Cresswell and Hayden Foxe came in at centre back for the suspended Matthew Kilgallon.
A clever short corner very nearly produced a well worked goal from an Ian Westlake delivery. Westlake played the ball low to the onrushing Adam Johnson who came close to opening his Leeds account when he fired hard into the near post but his shot was cleared.
However Luton were soon in front as Carlos Edwards charged down Stephen Crainey's clearance in the 11th minute to leave him with only Sullivan to beat.
United were soon back on level terms though, when Hayden Foxe rose above everyone else in the Luton box to head home from another Ian Westlake set piece.
Both sides continued to probe in an entertaining contest and United looked far more of a threat than in recent games as they as they sought to get their noses in front before the half time whistle.
But Luton took the lead soon after the restart. Feeney broke down the right and crossed for Rowan Vine to bundle the ball into the back of the net with his chest in the 54th minute
And moments later it was 3-1. Edwards crossed from the right, Vine returned the ball into the box and David Bell knocked the ball into an open goal.
United's reply was immediate but again they were left cursing their luck after a Richard Cresswell header was cleared off the Luton line. Just like Tuesday against Leicester, the United players felt the ball had crossed the line.
It got worse for Leeds with 16 minutes to go when Markus Heikkinen converted a Steve Robinson free kick to make it 4-1.
Carlos Edwards bagged his brace on the stroke of full time to compound the misery for a dejected Leeds.
