Gary McAllister points the way at Millwall

United boss Gary McAllister is expecting Thursday's Play-Off semi-final second-leg will go right to the wire.

Carlisle United appeared to be taking a 2-0 lead back to Cumbria after Monday's first-leg at Elland Road, but Dougie Freedman scored a valuable goal for United in the sixth minute of stoppage time to make it 2-1.

Away goals don't count double in the Play-Offs and United head for Brunton Park on Thursday, trailing by one goal, thanks to Freedman's late, late strike.

"The goal keeps us in the tie," said McAllister. "I felt even at 2-0 we would be capable of going up there and making them work hard for it, but this puts a different picture on the game.

"I said before it's a game of 180 minutes and I have a feeling it will go to the last minutes up there."

The United boss said he was disappointed with aspects of the performance on Monday night, yet despite that, it was worth noting that Carlisle goalkeeper Keiren Westwood picked up Sky's Man of the Match award, following two superb first half saves.

"I've got to applaud my players for the effort," said the boss. "They kept going beyond the 90 minutes. At times we have to tighten up when are in possession.

"Our final ball wasn't there, but having said that their keeper was terrific. He's a keeper that's impressed a few people this season and he lived up to his billing.

"We got caught on a few counters, and some of their attacking play on the break was good. But in a open first half we did create chances as well and our final ball just wasn't as good as theirs."

United were backed by a near full-house, and the support of the faithful never wavered, even as the game headed towards its final moments.

"The crowd stayed with us the whole distance and that was important," added the manager. "There was a wee of bit of frustration and we really appreciated that they stayed with us.

"We would have been disappointed with 2-0, but it wouldn't have been a case of surrendering.

"We'd still have been in the game but that goal makes all the difference.

"Carlisle deserved their win, but it's very much game on."
