GOOD RESPONSE
United boss Gary McAllister hailed the second half response from his players after the league campaign ended with a 2-1 win against Gillingham.
Over 38,000 watched goals from Bradley Johnson and Tresor Kandol turn around a 1-0 interval deficit to condemn the visiting Gills to relegation.
"It was a good win in the end," said the United manager. "I've got to say Gillingham gave it their all and their manager can be proud of his players.
"Most of the teams that we've played in the bottom half - those around relegation - haven't played like they're in predicament, but we can't console them. There's no words I can say."
The picture looked differently early on when Simeon Jackson fired the visitors into a shock lead, and it wasn't until the second period that United took a grip in proceedings.
"It was a poor start," said the boss. "It wasn't what I expected, but there was a reaction in the second half.
"We ground away and started being better. It wasn't a classic by any means, but we did things better. I was pleased with the reaction."
The manager had shuffled his pack for the game with Jonny Howson, Frazer Richardson, Dougie Freedman, and Neil Kilkenny all sitting out the clash. Jermaine Beckford was also injured and Alan Sheehan suspended.
In came young defender Scott Gardner, Peter Sweeney made a rare start, and Tresor Kandol and Anthony Elding played up-front. Teenager Fabian Delph featured as a second half substitute along with Seb Carole.
"You learn stuff all the time," added the boss. "I left four regulars out and I've got some food for thought, but I have said everyone has a part to play and they will. We will need the 19."
