Jonny Howson in action against FCV Dender

Competition is fierce for places in Gary McAllister's starting line-up for the weekend game against Crewe.

The boss made seven changes in midweek and was rewarded when his re-shuffled side beat Bradford City 2-1 in the first round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

The boss says he has identified his starting line-up for the game against Crewe, but competition conitnues to be fierce on the training ground with a full squad hoping to get the nod from the manager.

"Everyone is trying to get into the side," said midfielder Jonny Howson, who returned to the side in midweek after two games on the bench.

"He's mixed things up a bit and everyone knows that anyone can play.

"People know if they perform they will get a chance, and there's plenty of competition for places.

"You are always going to get changes and dips in forms, that's the way it is, but whoever plays, we'll all stick together and encourage the ones that are playing.

"It's up to those that aren't playing to push for a place in the side, and everybody is trying to do that."

Jonny made no secret of his pleasure when Andy Robinson put Leeds ahead against Bradford in midweek, and his celebrations showed his local pride.

"It's always nice to get one over on a local rival," said Jonny.

"There were periods in the second half where if we'd have got another we'd have seen the game out, but that didn't happen.

"They got a goal back, it gave them a lift, and they pushed on. But we got the win, and now we've got to push on against Crewe on Saturday."
