STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION

David Hockaday on pre-season victory…

United head coach David Hockaday says that his side's performance at Swindon Town on Tuesday night was a step in the right direction.

Steve Morison and Rudy Austin were United’s goalscorers on the night with a 2-1 victory being secured at the County Ground.

The head coach has spoken of his disappointment with the manner United conceded but he was happy with the overall outcome of the friendly contest.

“I knew that it was going to be a tough test because Swindon play good football,” said United’s head coach. “I just think that inch by inch we are getting better.

“I’m asking the players to get the ball down and play and they are trying to do that. I think that we did that in the first half on Tuesday night.

“I was really disappointed with the goal we conceded because we had a spare man on the edge of the box. If you are a spare man that means that they have got somebody spare and the ball went to him and he put it in.

“It was disappointing because I thought that we were dominant in the first half.

“In regards to match management and actually winning games there is lots of things that we need to work on but overall I think it is a step in the right direction.”

Hockaday made four changes to his starting line-up on Tuesday and said he was confident his selection would come away with the victory.

“I’m picking my strongest team in every game,” added the boss. “I just felt that was our best team tonight.

“On the way to Swindon I was talking to Junior Lewis and we thought there was a good focus about the team and we felt confident that they would give a performance.

“And if you are going to give a good performance then that enhances your chances of winning the game and that proved to be the case.”
