REDFEARN GLAD TO REWARD THE FANS

Head coach salutes the travelling support at Hillsborough...

Neil Redfearn was delighted to reward the United supporters with a Yorkshire derby victory at Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

Redfearn’s side were backed by an impressive 3,998 travelling fans at Hillsborough as second-half goals from Charlie Taylor and Steve Morison sealed the three points to cap a memorable awayday.

Both goals came in front of the rapturous Leeds support, and the full-time whistle sparked jubilant scenes, with a number of gold shirts flying into the away end as the players thanked the fans.

“Our supporters live it every week,” said Redfearn. “They go to work and it’s all geared towards coming to Elland Road or going away from home on a Saturday.

“It’s their lives. We’ve got a duty to do as much as we can to win every game that we play in.

“The commitment is there and the supporters can see it. They can see what’s happening, they’re not daft.

“At times this season, we’ve rewarded them with that effort and determination.

“If we’re going to get better and better then we need to add players if we’re thinking about the top end of the table.

“The building blocks and the foundations are there.”

The 2-1 victory ended United’s winless run of six Championship games and Redfearn says his young squad are constantly learning how to compete in this division.

“There was a real determination last week at Charlton and they were so down after the game, they had given everything,” said the head coach.

“All you can ask for is 110% and we gave that. We made poor decisions for their goal, but that’s football. You’ve got to get on with it.

“If we’re going to win every week, which we want to do because we want to get promoted, then sometimes we’ve got to learn to get beat.

“We’re not going to win every game. There’s something that surrounds this football club that a defeat is the end of the world.

“But these players are learning together and they’re getting a resoluteness about them that will get them out of this division. It’s part of the process.

“The team spirit and togetherness – you could see it again on Saturday – they were really determined to get something out of the game.”

A Chris Maguire penalty had put the hosts ahead on 36 minutes, prompting Redfearn into demanding an improvement from his side after the break.

“I said to the lads at half-time, ‘These things happen, you’ve just got to get on with it’,” he explained.

“We were playing alright but I said, ‘Alright is going to get you beat and you’ve got to find that little bit extra to get us back level and get our noses in front’.

“You could see the difference in the second half. I thought we stepped the tempo up.

“We pushed our game on maybe 10 or 15 yards. The two midfield players got that little bit tighter and we looked like we were going to score.”
