BACKING FOR UNITED GOALKEEPER

Marco Silvestri gets vote of confidence...

United president Massimo Cellino and head coach Neil Redfearn have both issued their backing for goalkeeper Marco Silvestri.

The highly-rated 23-year-old, who arrived from Chievo during the summer, has been one of United’s stand-out performers so far in his first season in English football.

Silvestri has been ever-present in the Championship and made the Football League’s Team of the Week following his heroics in August’s 1-0 win over Bolton, in which he helped preserve the three points with a number of stunning saves.

United beat off competition to secure Silvestri’s services on a four-year deal back in July, and Massimo Cellino believes he is one of the best around.

"We are lucky to have Marco at Leeds," said the president.

"He is a very talented young goalkeeper that could be playing in Serie A in Italy, but has chosen to join us in Leeds.

"For his age, Marco is one of the best young goalkeepers in Europe."

Redfearn also echoed Cellino’s sentiments and thinks Silvestri has been one of United’s star performers this term.

"Marco has been outstanding this season. He’s probably been our Player of the Season," he said.

"In some of the games, he’s won us games with saves and blocks and the way he’s played.

"He’s an outstanding young talent."
