GREEN LOOKING TO USE EXPERIENCE

New United goalkeeper hopes his experience can benefit the squad...

Goalkeeper Rob Green is hoping his vast experience can benefit the United squad after completing his switch to Elland Road earlier this week.

Green, who has over 600 career appearances and 12 England caps to his name, penned a one-year deal on Wednesday evening following his release from Queens Park Rangers earlier this summer.

It meant the 36-year-old – one of United’s six summer signings so far – immediately became the most senior player within the current squad, something which Green aims to embrace after linking up with his new team-mates for their pre-season training camp in Ireland.

“I’ve joined the squad as the oldest member of the group and the role I’ll have to play with my experience really appeals to me,” the former Norwich City and West Ham stopper told leedsunited.com.

“The coaches have told me about the ability that’s in the group – there’s a real belief here.

“They’ve told me what my role would be as one of the more experienced players in the group; to bring that voice and experience. That appeals to me as a person and as a player.

“It would be a waste for me not to play a role like that. I’m here for however the manager needs me.

“He’s got a team here who he rates really highly and he’s got a young team of players, who, he says with the right guidance, will really flourish.

“As a senior member of the squad, you hope to be able to impart some of your knowledge and see people grow on the pitch.”

Green admits he had interest from elsewhere prior to making the move to United, but the former England international insists he needed little time to make a decision once he received the call from Leeds.

“I was in conversation with a number of clubs,” he said. “I spoke to a lot of people over the summer.

“When this opportunity at Leeds came around, there was no looking back. I’ll be moving the family up and I’m looking forward to being a part of it as a family and as a player.

“I first spoke to the manager over the weekend and then I got a phone call on Wednesday morning, while I was at my daughter’s sports day, to say I could come up to get the medical done and sign.

“It’s exciting to be here. This is one of those opportunities where the first phone call asking if you want to come and play for Leeds is a very quick one. It was a ‘yes’ straightaway.

“I’m thrilled to be here. I’ve spoken to the manager and I know what he’s got in store and what he’s planning.

“What he said really resonated with me and re-affirmed my feelings towards this opportunity.

“After a long wait over the summer, the last few days have happened very quickly and now I’m ready to go. I can’t wait to get going.

“I’ve spent the summer working hard in the gym and I’m just looking forward to putting that into practice now and playing games.”
