COOK FIT FOR BRENTFORD - REDFEARN

Head coach provides team news ahead of Brentford's visit to Elland Road...

United head coach Neil Redfearn expects to have Lewis Cook available for Saturday’s clash with Brentford (3pm), despite the young midfielder being substituted off late in the win over Huddersfield.

Cook was replaced on 86 minutes by eventual match-winner Billy Sharp at the John Smith’s Stadium after picking up an issue with his knee in the closing stages of the second half.

The midfielder, who celebrated his 18th birthday this week, has been ever-present for United in the Championship since Redfearn took over on a permanent basis at the start of November.

And although the head coach admits he did have initial concerns over Cook’s fitness, the youngster is likely to be in contention for Brentford’s visit to Elland Road.

"He just over-extended his knee a little bit and there was a little bit of concern, but he’s been back training this week," said Redfearn.

"He’s massive to us. Lewis has had an outstanding season and he’s an integral part of what we’re doing.

"He’ll be fit for the weekend."

Redfearn also spoke of his options in attack, with Sharp eager for a starting berth after coming off the bench to deadly effect at Huddersfield.

"Billy’s always knocking on the door," said Redfearn. "His attitude has been absolutely first class, I have to say.

"He gets frustrated and he shows it sometimes, but I don’t mind that because it shows he cares.

"He’s a finisher and he’s bright. He’s looked bright in training.

"The more confidence we get with the five in midfield, then we might be able to branch out and play 4-4-2 and get at teams, particularly at home.

"We’ll have to wait and see but Billy has done his case no harm at all."

Meanwhile, new loan signing Edgar Cani could come into contention after completing his switch from Catania at the start of the week, meaning Redfearn has options and added competition in attack.

"He’s a great build for a big man up front," Redfearn said of the Albanian striker. "He’s got a good touch and good awareness.

"He links in well and he’s aware of the people around him.

"He’s got the makings of that foil as a lone striker.

"Steve Morison’s been playing really well but, apart from Steve, we haven’t really got anyone else who can play that tall target man that’s mobile.

"He’s a welcome addition and he brings competition."
