UNITED WELL PREPARED - REDFEARN

Head coach previews the trip to Sheffield Wednesday...

Neil Redfearn insists his side are well-prepared for Saturday’s Yorkshire derby at Sheffield Wednesday (12.30pm).

United travel to Hillsborough for the final away game of the season and are looking make a return to winning ways following a run of five straight Championship defeats.

"We’ve prepared well," said Redfearn.

"We’re aware of the fact it’s a Yorkshire derby and obviously the bragging rights are at stake.

"We’ve put the lads back in place and monitored what they did on Monday after coming back after three games in one week.

"We had an Under-21s game on Monday which was great. There were some great performances which have given me a little bit to think about.

"We’ve planned and prepared a little bit more for Saturday’s game and we’ll finalise that on Friday."

Wednesday come into the clash occupying 12th place in the table and have lost just once in their last six heading into the closing stages of what has been a steady campaign for the Owls.

Redfearn said: "I think they’ve been very resolute and tough to play against.

"I think they’ve got a good manager in Stuart Gray – he knows the level.

"I think they haven’t been that far off, they’ve just missed that bit to make them different and to make them challenge.

"They don’t seem to concede much and they always seem to be tight. I think they’re right up there with regard to clean sheets.

"They’re a tough nut to crack."

Redfearn was present in the dug-out as part of Brian McDermott’s backroom staff for United’s last visit to Hillsborough, and the head coach is keen to ensure there won’t be a repeat of January 2014’s humiliating 6-0 defeat.

"It was tough because it was a disaster on the day," he said.

"Everything that could go wrong for us did, and everything that could go right for them did.

"I think it was just one of those sorts of days.

"I think if you’re not ready for a Yorkshire derby, you can go under big style.

"We had Huddersfield at home last year and beat them 5-1. They weren’t quite ready and we were up for it. It happens.

"It’s happened for us and it’s happened against us. You’ve got to make sure that you’re ready and that you lock horns.

"You’ve got to make sure that you’re up for it. That might sound like a strange thing to say, and you’ve got to be up for every game, but these sorts of games throw up a competitive edge.

"Everything is cranked up a notch and you’ve got to be ready."
