COOPER CONFIDENT OF CLIMBING TABLE

Defender believes the team are better than the current league position...

Liam Cooper believes United’s league position is not a true reflection of the team’s abilities and says they will be doing everything they can to climb up it.

Following last Saturday’s 3-1 win over Blackpool, United moved up to 15th in the Championship table as they brought an end to a run of eight games without a win.

Cooper says the display at Elland Road was much more like the ones he knows the team are capable of producing as they now have their sights set on putting a good run of form together.

"We know we’ve got pace in the team. Adryan’s come in and he’s done very well," said Cooper.

"When we do start passing, when we do start knocking the ball around, nobody can stop us.

"It’s great for me and Jason to sit back and watch it – it makes our job a lot easier.

"There’s always a sense of relief but we’re all confident in our own ability, confident in our ability as a team.

"We believe we’re a top-six team and we’re going to push for that."

The win over Blackpool ushered in the international break in positive fashion and Cooper thinks the two-week absence of Championship football could prove to be beneficial, with more time spent on the training ground.

"We’d like to take the momentum into another game but it gives the manager and the staff the chance to get stuck into us in these next couple of weeks, work us hard and get us in the right frame of mind for the next game," he said.

"I think seeing ourselves in the league position where we are, we know we’re a lot better than that.

"We’ll be working hard to get out of that and hopefully we can do."

Cooper, who made the Football League Team of the Week, opened the scoring at Elland Road and hopes his recent displays can help make him a regular in the side.

"I’d like to think so. Football’s a game of opinions and everybody is entitled to theirs," he said.

"Hopefully, come the next game, I’ll get a game and will give my all again."
