COOK BACKS MONK APPOINTMENT

United midfielder keen to impress the new boss following international duty...

Lewis Cook has backed United’s appointment of Garry Monk and says he will be doing everything he can to impress the new boss upon his return from the Under-19 European Championships this summer.

Cook is expected to be named in the Young Lions squad for next month’s showpiece tournament in Germany, meaning the midfielder will be away on international duty for a large part of United’s pre-season under Monk.

The 19-year-old, who was named the Football League’s Young Player of the Year last term, was due to travel to Mexico at the end of last month for a friendly double-header in preparation for this summer’s competition, but a minor injury forced him to withdraw and Cook has since been working to ensure he’s ready for the Euros.

“I had a slight bruise on my toe and the physio team thought it was best to leave that trip and prepare right for the finals,” he explained.

“I’m just trying to get fit for the Euros in July. I’ve been keeping myself ticking over to make sure I’m ready for that.

“We’ll meet up a couple of times for a few training camps to get sharp and ready for that in early July.

“I think the latest we could come back from the Euros is around July 25th, but I feel I’ll be match-fit and ready to go after the tournament. That’s a good thing.

“I need to perform at the Euros and then continue putting my all into it when I get back.”

On Monk’s arrival, Cook added: “I think it’s a great appointment for the club – he’s the right man for the job I think.

“He’s got a lot of experience managing and playing in the higher leagues. I’m sure he’ll do well.

“It excites you – I know he wants us to score a lot of goals, create a lot of opportunities and play exciting football. It should be fun for us and fun for the fans.

“I think we’ve got a really good squad at Leeds which should be higher in the table and pushing for promotion.

“Hopefully, with the right guidance and the right attitude, we can push to try and get there.

“We all can’t wait for it all to start again and push for a good season.”
