SAM FOCUSED ON MAINTAINING PLACE

Goalscorer Sam Byram reflects on the 3-2 win at Molineux...

Sam Byram insists he is fully focused on re-cementing his place in the United side after hitting a brace in Thursday’s 3-2 victory away to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 22-year-old returned to the starting line-up at Molineux and netted either side of half-time in a Man-of-the-Match-winning display to mark his first start for almost two months.

Byram’s contract situation has dominated the local headlines in recent weeks, but the Thorp Arch graduate was just glad to be back on the pitch on Thursday night after an admittedly “frustrating” period out of the side.

“At the minute I’m just concentrating on trying to get back into the team,” he said. “I’m working unbelievably hard off the pitch.

“It paid off on Thursday night and I’m just glad to get the three points.

“It’s been frustrating for me but it was nice to be back in the team and to help the lads get a win.

“It was an important game for us. I think we did well, we battled and we got the three points.”

Byram levelled proceedings with a cool finish on the stroke of half-time after Benik Afobe had fired the hosts into an early lead, before adding his second to make it 3-1 with a towering header on the hour mark.

Asked which goal he enjoyed the most, Byram said: “The first one was probably my favourite.

“I don’t score too many so to get two in a game was a nice feeling and it’s nice to give the supporters something to cheer about.

“The support has been brilliant; you could see how many turned up. It’s an unbelievable following and it really helps us on our away trips.”
