FULHAM: EVANS PROUD OF \'DETERMINED\' UNITED

Head coach gives his verdict on Wednesday night's 1-1 draw...

Steve Evans spoke of his pride after seeing United put in what he described as a "real determined performance" in Wednesday night’s 1-1 draw away to Fulham.

The hosts had opened the scoring at Craven Cottage through Moussa Dembele’s first-half strike, but Evans’ men hit back after the break as Chris Wood converted from the penalty spot following a handball inside the Fulham area.

And United could well have left the capital with all three points following a string of fine saves from Man of the Match Fulham goalkeeper Joe Lewis.

Ahead of kick-off, Evans had called for his side to “have a go” following three consecutive defeats in the Championship, and the new head coach was pleased with the “passion and effort” on show as his United reign got underway with an encouraging point.

“We came here tonight and put in a real determined performance,” he said. “I wanted passion and effort from the players.

"I thought their goalkeeper was the difference tonight between it being 3 or 4-1 to us.

"We were disappointed to go behind but we showed fight and tenacity to get back on terms.

“We were bombing forward trying to get the winner.

“They scored the first time they’re in our box but I asked the players to be big characters at half-time.

“I said ‘I don’t care if Fulham score a second goal if we play with that spirit.’ If we get that spirit again we’ll be fine."

Evans, taking charge for the first time since his appointment on Monday, received a warm reception from the 3,789 travelling supporters both before and after the game.

“I’m very humbled and I felt choked when going across the pitch at the start of the game and seeing those 4,000 Leeds fans,” he said.

“After the game I felt proud too because those fans knew that their team had been dogged and that Fulham were fortunate to get a point.

“It’s fantastic to be the manager of this club and feels very humbling. And we’re now off and running.”
