STOKES EFFORT CLINCHES U21S VICTORY
Youngsters end the season on a high with win at Coventry...
A first-half strike from Eoghan Stokes ensured our Under-21s ended their league campaign with a 1-0 win away to Coventry City on Monday afternoon.
Robbie McDaid could have opened the scoring inside the first minute at the Sky Blue Lodge following a defensive mix-up from the hosts, while James Maddison was twice denied by the woodwork for the hosts in a frantic start to proceedings.
Luke Booker had also threatened during the early stages, before Stokes managed to break the deadlock on 29 minutes after capitalising on a mistake from Coventry’s trialist in defence.
The second half saw Booker go through on goal again, only to be denied by Sky Blues goalkeeper Reice Charles-Cook. At the opposite end, meanwhile, the lead was preserved by a fine Daniel Atkinson stop after Blair Turgott had raced free.
Tom Lyman stepped off the bench and forced another good save out of Charles-Cook in the closing stages, and Atkinson parried away Ben Stevenson’s long-range effort in an end-to-end finale.
The result means the United youngsters have finished the Professional Development League campaign in third place, narrowly missing out on a place in the play-offs.
However, before heading away for the summer, a trip to the Isle of Man to face their senior FA team in a friendly on Wednesday is next on their agenda. Click here for more details.
