WALTERS HOPING FOR A CHANCE

Young striker on an important season…

United striker Lewis Walters wants to impress during pre-season so that he will be given the chance once the 2014/15 Championship season begins on August 9.

The 19-year-old made the pre-season trip to Italy earlier this month and was a scorer against FC Gherdeina in his first senior outing, and the young striker is happy with how the summer has gone.

“It’s going well,” said the young striker. “The first two games have gone well and it was great in Italy to get the fitness going.

“We won the game over there 16-0 and it was good to get a goal.

“I’m very happy with where I am right now. I’m training with the first team and you can’t ask for much more than that really.

“fitness is the most important thing at the minute and I’m working on that. The football will come after.

“Before pre-season I did a lot of work to make sure I came back fit and had the chance to impress so that I could get a good chance.”

Walters is no stranger to hitting the back of the net as he was a regular scorer for United’s Under-18 and Under-21 sides, but he admits to wanting to now make the step-up.

“If I can do well in the games I think that I’ll have a good chance,” said Lewis. “All the strikers have got to show our worth. I need to show that I can improve, if I can do that I’ll hopefully get a chance.

“There is a lot of experience and I can only learn from that. I’m hoping to get a chance this season, I don’t know when it will be but I’ll be looking to take that chance.”

United head to Mansfield Town on Tuesday (7.45pm) and goals are on the agenda for Lewis.

“I want another goal. I want a couple of goals," he said. "You always put pressure on yourself as a striker to get a goal so I want to take the pressure off.”
