Youngster eyes first-team push after signing new contract...

Young full-back Tyler Denton is hoping to impress the new United coaching staff during pre-season as he sets his sights on pushing for a first-team debut.

The 19-year-old progressed through the ranks at Thorp Arch and has been a regular fixture for the Under-21s, ending last season as their highest appearance maker after featuring 27 times.

Denton signed a new one-year contract at Elland Road on Wednesday afternoon to extend his stay at the club he joined as a six-year-old.

Reflecting on his new deal, Denton said: "I’m really pleased. I found out late because the season had finished so a lot of the boys were a bit anxious to whether we’d get one.

"I’m really happy to have signed."

Asked about his aims for the season ahead, the left-back added: "The same as everyone, I think – impress the new gaffer and see if you can work your way in to his plans and go from there.

"When we get back in to pre-season, I’m sure he’ll  have a chat with all the boys and we’ll get to know each other."

Denton penned his new contract alongside team-mate Luke Parkin, who was another one of the eight youngsters to be offered new terms by the club this summer.

"We’ve grown up together and we’re pretty much a family," said Denton when asked about keeping the crop of talent together.

"We saw Kalvin make his debut at the end of last season. We all go and watch their debuts, that’s how close together we are."

Charlie Taylor and Gaetano Berardi will provide stiff competition for the left-back spot, but Denton is confident he can step up to the plate if the chance arises.

"I don’t think I’d be here otherwise," he said. "I think all the boys have a chance and hopefully I can really push Charlie or whoever else for a spot there.

"I just need to go back into pre-season fit, which I am, and really push for it.

"I spoke to Matt Pears the fitness coach and he said we’ll be starting out with the first team, which is a bonus for us really.

"That’s a chance for us to push them. All the boys have trained with them."
