PHILLIPS KEEN TO IMPRESS

Young midfielder hopes to make first-team push...

United youngster Kalvin Phillips says he is keen to follow the lead of team-mates Lewis Cook, Sam Byram and Alex Mowatt by forcing his way towards the first team.

The 18-year-old midfielder, who signed professional terms in the summer, has earned rave reviews for his displays in the Under-21s after captaining the Under-18s last season.

Phillips impressed despite his side’s recent defeat to Colchester at Elland Road as his all-action style of play caught the eye once again.

"I like a good tackle," said Phillips. "I like playing as well when I’ve got the ball, passing it, but I like a good tackle."

Over 700 supporters turned up to Elland Road on Monday night, while many more watched the game live on LUTV, and Phillips says he enjoys playing on the hallowed turf in front of a crowd.

"It’s brilliant. The fans come and watch as well – it gives you a confidence boost," he said.

Phillips is hoping his displays have not gone unnoticed as he looks to mirror the likes of Cook, Mowatt and Byram, who have all progressed into the senior team in recent years.

Asked about his aims for the season, Phillips said: "Just work as hard as I can and try and impress someone who’s looking down and hopefully get my chance to maybe be in the squad or get a game.

"Lewis, I’ve known him for quite a while, he’s a brilliant player. Mowatt as well, Sam Byram too.

"We’re all looking to follow their footsteps and get into the first team like they have."

Phillips also praised academy manager and head of coaching Neil Redfearn, having worked alongside him throughout his time at Thorp Arch.

"He’s had a massive influence," said Phillips. "I’ve known him since Under-16s, he’s class.

"He did a brilliant job with the first team. They needed wins and he got wins.

"How he sets the game up, he doesn’t expect to go out and get beat."
