Goals in either half from Chris Wood and Kemar Roofe saw United’s pre-season campaign end with a 2-1 victory over Atalanta at Elland Road on Saturday afternoon.

Wood converted a first-half penalty to put United in front after referee Bobby Madley had spotted a handball inside the Atalanta box, but the visitors hit back within six minutes through Marco D’Alessandro’s strike.

Roofe sealed it on the 68th minute, though, as he turned home a low corner from Kalvin Phillips to make it four wins from five friendly fixtures under new boss Garry Monk.

It was the visitors who had the afternoon’s first sight of goal inside the eighth minute, Rob Green comfortably dealing with a 25-yard strike, before United threatened at the opposite end as Roofe cut inside from the left before firing over.

Charlie Taylor and Ronaldo Vieira were called into crucial blocks following swift Atalanta counter-attacks, while trialist Gabriele Perico was well-placed to steer behind a dangerous-looking cross from the left as the Italians looked to utilise their pace on the break.

It was United who made the break through on 25 minutes, though, as Wood converted emphatically from the penalty spot after a Stuart Dallas free-kick from deep was adjudged to have been handled inside the area.

But the lead lasted just a matter of six minutes as Atalanta pulled level courtesy of D’Alessandro’s first-time strike from inside the area after the visitors had seized upon a loose pass.

And Atalanta almost found themselves in front five minutes later as Sol Bamba hooked Alejandro Gomez’s outstretched volley off the line in the nick of time after the ball had been poked beyond Green.

The sides went in level at the break before the second half began in a largely uneventful manner, with Andrea Conti’s speculative strike from range the only notable activity during the first 15 minutes after the restart.

But a lightening run and dangerous cross from substitute Hadi Sacko helped spark the game back into life, as a crucial touch from an Atalanta defender prevented Roofe from a simple tap-in.

However, the resulting corner did see Roofe net his first goal in United colours, turning home Phillips’ low delivery from close-range at the near post.

The closing stages saw both sides have goals ruled out for offside, while Green was called into two fine saves to preserve United’s advantage as Monk’s side saw out the victory.
