DEVELOPMENT SQUAD UNDONE IN SHEFFIELD

Development Squad fall at Sheffield United…

United’s Development Squad ended the league season with a 4-1 defeat away at Sheffield United.

The hosts were two goals up after 20 minutes but United could have pulled one back just before the break. Luke Parkin was judged to have handled the ball before putting his diving header into the back of the net.

United showed spirit in the second half but the home side managed to score a further two goals to put the tie beyond Neil Redfearn’s side.

Lewis Walters pulled one back for United in the 86th minute after creating chances towards the end but the hosts held on to record a 4-1 victory.

One plus point from the afternoon was that United goalkeeper made his return from a long injury lay-off.

The defeat was only the Development Squad’s second competitive defeat since September last year.

“We lost to the better side on Tuesday afternoon,” said Neil Redfearn. “It was just one of those games.

“With the exception of Jamie Ashdown in goal we had a very young side out and they will learn from this experience.

“Sheffield were sharper and quicker to the ball than us and deserved their win.

“I can’t be too critical of the players because they have had a fantastic season and have only lost two league games since September.

“Tuesday afternoon was tough but overall I’m pleased with the season and how the young lads have performed throughout.”

Senior professional development coach Neil Redfearn is hoping to arrange a number of friendly games before the summer commences.

United: Ashdown, Booker, Coyle, Coker (Skelton), Bryan, Lenighan, Thompson, Phillips (Mulhern), Parkin, Cook, Walters.
