BOTAKA KEEN TO LIGHT UP LEEDS

New signing says making the switch to Elland Road was an easy decision...

New signing Jordan Botaka is confident he can quickly adapt to life in the Championship, insisting "if I didn’t think I was ready, I wouldn’t have come here".

Botaka, 22, a deadline day arrival from Dutch club Excelsior, penned a two-year deal to become United’s eighth new addition of the summer.

In his first interview since making the switch to Elland Road, the winger says his move happened “very quick” and that he needed little consideration after having big ambitions of playing in England.

“One week before the deadline, my agent called me and talked to me about Leeds,” Botaka said.

“For me, I was open to it and all of a sudden I was taking a plane to come here and I signed, had a medical and everything.

“It happened very quick and I’m happy.

“I think England is the best country to play football in. Everything, the stadium, the supporters, the competition is just way better. The best players are in England, I think.”

Botaka spent two years with Excelsior, featuring 33 times in the Eredivisie last season after helping them achieve top-flight promotion in his debut campaign.

Asked about adjusting to Championship football, the DR Congo international replied: “If I didn’t think I was ready, I wouldn’t have come here.

“I will have to adapt like other players who have come to England and I will have to do my best to follow them. I have faith that it will be okay.”

Botaka already admits to being amazed by the level of support shown towards him by the United fans, saying his phone “went mad” after signing due to the amount of messages on social media.

“Before I came here I knew Leeds United as a club in England but I didn’t know how big it was,” he said.

“When people started talking about Leeds United, I started to look on the internet to know more about the club.

“Everywhere you can see that Leeds have a great history, like in the Champions League and the Premier League.

“For me, it was easy to make that choice to come here. I don’t regret it for a second.

“I’ve already had a lot of messages on my Instagram and Twitter. From the moment I signed, my phone started going mad.

“I knew then what it would be like going into the stadium in front of 30,000 people... I think I’ll just open my mouth and look around for a second. It will be massive.”

Asked about settling in with his new team-mates, Botaka added: “From the moment I came, they started talking to me and making jokes. They’ve made a good impression.

“It’s a good mix. It’s good for me because I’m young.

“If I have players of my age around me, I know it’s easy for them to understand me because we’re the same age.

“Training was good - it was totally different to what I’m used to doing in Holland. But I think the training here will make me very strong.

“It’s physical; the players here are always stronger than in Holland. In Holland it’s more about the technique – that’s the difference.”
