ERWIN RETURNS TO THORP ARCH

ERWIN RETURNS TO THORP ARCH

Scottish forward back in training with United after loan stint...

Lee Erwin is back in training this morning after returning from a month-long loan spell with Bury.

The Scottish forward, a summer signing from Motherwell who is still awaiting his United debut, made three appearances during his time with the League One side, starting once and featuring  twice as a substitute.

Erwin could now come back into the frame for Saturday’s Yorkshire derby at Huddersfield Town, and head coach Steve Evans is keen to see him make an impression at Thorp Arch.

“Today is his first day back with us and he has to demonstrate that he’s good enough to be here because, if he’s not, he’ll end up back in Scotland,” Evans said.

“But he’s a confident boy. I rang him as soon as I took over to remind him that I’m a manager who was keen to try and secure his services.

“I’ll also be having a chat with him this morning about my opinion on where he’s been to how he’s going to have to play – it really is a big step up in terms of the quality of opposition.

“It’s fair to say that he’ll also play with many better players, so there’s a balance in that.

“He had all the raw ingredients to get an opportunity to come to a great club like this. I know he was grateful to come here.”

Evans also made it no secret that Erwin was a player he admired during his time at Motherwell, having looked to bring him to former club Rotherham over the summer.

“I like him, I tried to do something at Rotherham,” he said.

“I went up to Scotland to watch him twice and I’d say that for one-and-a-half of the two games, he did really well and in the other half he did okay.

“When we were busy trying to have a conversation with Motherwell, I read on Sky Sports News that he’d signed for Leeds United! I thought ‘lucky so-and-sos!’

“He’s a young man who I like and he’s hungry. He’s born and bred a few miles away from where I was.

“He has to earn everything, he’s come down to England to prove a point and make a point.”
