ALEX FEELING REWARDED

Midfielder's delight at monthly award...

United midfielder Alex Mowatt spoke of his joy at being named as the Football League Young Player of the Month for November, but admits the award came as a bit of a surprise to him.

The 19-year-old started the month with a goal in the defeat at Cardiff before hitting a spectacular brace against Charlton three days later, earning himself an England Under-20s call-up along the way.

Mowatt also starred in the impressive home wins that following, setting up goals in the victories over Blackpool and Derby County as his performances continued to catch the eye.

"It’s a good feeling when you win things like this, you feel rewarded from how you’ve been playing and the things you’ve been doing," said Mowatt.

"I didn’t know anything about it. I know I was up for the Championship Player of the Month but I didn’t get that. I wasn’t expecting this!"

After finding the net just once in his breakthrough campaign last season, Mowatt was keen to feature on the scoresheet more often and already has four goals to his name this term.

"I’ve been playing well these last couple of months and adding goals to it," he said.

"Last season I’d play well but I wouldn’t be scoring goals or creating goals. This year, I think I’ve just added those things to my game which are important for me.

"That’s the most pleasing thing for me, I want to score more goals.

"I was disappointed that I only got one last season, I thought I should have scored more.

"I want to score more goals and create more goals. I want to be one of those creative midfielders that chips in with the goals as well."

Mowatt also hailed the influence of Neil Redfearn, having worked with the head coach in both first-team and youth capacities at Thorp Arch.

"I’ve been here many years now and worked under Redders for quite a few years as well. It’s been a big part of my progression," he said.

"You need to get results in the first team. It’s a little bit different to when you’re playing in the Under-18s and the results don’t matter as much."

On his England call-up, Mowatt added: "England is a good bonus, that’s a reward as well when you’re getting called up and going to St George’s Park. It’s a good experience.

Brazilian playmaker Adryan singled out the young midfielder for praise during his interview with LUTV last week, and Mowatt says the pair have a good understanding of each other’s game.

"He’s a great player and he’s just one of those players that you just know how to play with, like in training doing one-twos with him, he said.

"We just read each other really well and know what’s going to happen. I like playing with him a lot."
