Darko Milanič gives his Brentford verdict…

New United head coach Darko Milanič took charge for the first time on Saturday at Brentford, and he says the 2-0 defeat wasn’t what he wanted on his Championship debut.

A goal in both halves proved enough for the home side and condemned United to what the head coach called a “bad result.”

“For me it was a big day,” said United’s head coach. “It was debut in the Championship.

“It was a bad result for us but I have to congratulate the home team, they played very well.

“Throughout the game we had some problems with the opponents.

“We started better in the second half. In the first 15 minutes of the second half we played very well. We had control of the game and had good possession. We also made some shots.

“But after that it was very difficult. At the end we had to risk more because of their goals. They were very dangerous on the counter-attack.

“I wanted to bring on a striker but in the midfield we weren’t controlling the game. If I brought on another striker it would have been too much for our young players.”

United now face an Elland Road double-header, with Reading on Wednesday (7.45pm) and Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday (12.15pm), and the head coach has spoken of the importance of the home crowd.

“For me and also for the team it is very important,” added Darko. “With the help of our fans we can do it.”
