BOSS GIVES ACCRINGTON VERDICT

David Hockaday on his teams cup win…

United head coach David Hockaday was a relieved man after seeing his side beat Accrington Stanley 2-1 at Elland Road on Tuesday evening.

United looked to coasting towards the next round but a late goal and a sending off left the head coach saying the last seven minutes of the game was “squeaky bum time.”

Two goals in the first half from striker Souleymane Doukara made sure that United’s name was in the mix for the second round, but the head coach insists his side are still a work in progress.

“The first half showed little bits of what we are capable of,” said the head coach. “We expressed ourselves and it was 2-0 at half time but it could have been more.

“The second half showed where we really are, we are a work in progress. I wanted to get people on the pitch and give them an experience of Elland Road.

“Until we conceded, which was really poor defending, we were comfortable. But the last five or seven minutes and it was 2-1 it was squeaky bum time.

“Overall it was a good performance in the first half and we showed glimpses of what we are about but it shows that we have got a lot of work to do.”

Hockaday praised his two goal striker saying that he bounced back from a disappointing afternoon at Millwall the previous Saturday.

“On Saturday he froze,” he said. “It was against Millwall in front of a big crowd, it was his first game and he didn’t handle the occasion.

“But he will be better for that.

“We had a chat with him and he performed very well on Tuesday night.”

The draw for the second round of the Capital One Cup will take place live on Sky Sports on Wednesday night after the Coventry City vs Cardiff City match.
