SAM PROUD OF APPEARANCE LANDMARKS

Youngster reflects on becoming United's current highest appearance maker...

The 2014/15 campaign saw Sam Byram return to full flight to become the highest appearance maker within the current squad at the age of just 21, something which he says he is keen to continue.

Sam, who featured 39 times in all competitions, scoring three goals, also made the most appearances of any outfield player after putting his injury woes of the previous season behind him.

The Thorp Arch graduate made his 100th start for the club in Easter Monday’s narrow defeat at Wolves and went on to end the season with a total of 119 United appearances to his name, just three years after making his first-team debut.

"It’s a big achievement and one I am proud of, even if it feels a bit surreal as well," said Sam.

"I was unbelievably proud of my first-team debut and it has been the same in every single appearance since then that I have had the chance to play for Leeds United.

"If I had to pick out certain games then it would probably be the cup games in my first season.

"Chelsea and Tottenham are two of the best teams around, so to get the chance to face them, at home and in my first year, was pretty special.

"There were 35,000 plus crowds at Elland Road and there are not many better experiences around than running out in front of those numbers of Leeds fans.

"If I had to pick one, it would probably be Tottenham as we won that game. But, as I say, they have all been pretty special.

"To have made 100 appearances for my boyhood club, it doesn’t get much better. I am hoping there will be plenty more to come, too."

Sam made his name as an attack-minded right-back after bursting onto the scene in 2012, but the second half of the last season saw him utilised in a more advanced role on the right-wing.

"I had quite a few different positions as a kid," he explained.

"I was centre-midfield for a while, and then I move to centre-back. That lasted three or four years, basically through the development teams.

"I then got to 16 and everyone was growing but me. I was moved to right-back as a result.

"The big thing with the Academy is you have to be comfortable on the ball. It isn’t so much about positions, just being comfortable. That has helped me, undoubtedly.

"Having said that, the change has taken quite a bit of getting used to. Compared to playing at right-back, where the whole game is in front of you, playing further forward – either in right-midfield or right-wing – is very different.

"A lot of the time, I am playing with my back to the goal. That is a big change to get used to, but I have enjoyed it, even if I do feel right-back is my best position."
