BOSS GIVES CHESTERFIELD REACTION

David Hockaday on his sides display at League One side…

Two Rudy Austin penalties secured a draw at League One Chesterfield but head coach David Hockaday was left confused with his sides display.

After a goalless first half the goals flowed in the second period with the hosts and United swapping the lead before the eventual 2-2 scoreline ending the match.

“I thought that we started the game slowly and got into it but by half time we were the better team,” said the head coach. “We got into some great positions again but we didn’t put the ball onto the back of the net.

“At the start of the second half we went ahead and by that time I thought that we were worth the 1-0 and then we stopped. I don’t know why because that wasn’t in the game plan.

“I’ve likened it to someone that’s in a fight, you’ve knock them down but then picked them up and given them a free swing.

“We know that Chesterfield are a passing team. They couldn’t pass their way through to goal so they brought a big guy on and hit long balls to him, which is the easiest type of defending to do. If you can’t defend 50-60 yard balls then you do have a problem. On the day we couldn’t handle that.”

Two Rudy Austin penalties secured a draw at Chesterfield but head coach David Hockaday was left confused with his sides display.

“To go from 1-0 up to 2-1 down from long balls against a passing team isn’t good enough,” said Hockaday. “After that our fitness levels kicked in and we went back at them.

“The team spirit was good as well and we deservedly equalised.  I thought at the end of it that if it had gone on for another five or 10 minutes we would have won the game because we were on the front foot again.

“I’m confused with going a goal ahead and stopping and I’m disappointed with conceding goals from long balls.”

The head coach insists that the squad will keep working hard on improving.

“The improvement needs to be ongoing,” added David. “Even if we go to Millwall, play brilliantly and win we still need to improve after that.

“We’ve got a long way to go and we know that. They are working hard on the training ground and we will keep on working.”
