CARDIFF: GARRY MONK\'S VERDICT

United boss reflects on Saturday's 2-0 victory in South Wales...

Garry Monk was pleased to see his side take “another step forward” after United made it back-to-back Sky Bet Championship victories for the first time this season by beating Cardiff City 2-0 in the Welsh capital on Saturday afternoon.

United, buoyed by the midweek win over Blackburn Rovers at Elland Road, claimed the three points in South Wales courtesy of second-half goals from Chris Wood (penalty) and Pablo Hernandez.

"It's been a good week”, said Monk. “And today was another step forward for us - it was a good, all-round team performance where everybody contributed.

“We were clinical when we needed to be and we defended well when we needed to – we looked solid during the spells where Cardiff tried to put us under pressure. I thought we deserved the win today.

“Getting back-to-back wins in this league is vitally important and I’m really pleased for the team and the staff who have been excellent in working towards this. We know improvements can still be made but today was a step in the right direction.

“Our determination to win it in the second half was what got us the win I thought – you could see that we really wanted it and were trying to make something happen.

“I felt it was a penalty for the first goal but I thought a goal was coming anyway – we were on top.

“Everyone played their part today. The fans were unbelievable once again – they took control of the stadium and that was all you could hear throughout the game. There’s nothing better than giving them an awayday like that.”
