CHARLIE ADJUSTING WELL TO ADVANCED ROLE

Youngster enjoying new duties on the left of midfield...

Charlie Taylor is adjusting to life in his new role on the left-wing and says he is relishing being part of a United side heavily-influenced by fellow Academy graduates.

A natural left-back, Taylor has found himself playing in a more advanced midfield role for United’s last two Championship outings, helping Neil Redfearn’s side secure back-to-back victories over Ipswich and Wigan.

"I don’t mind it," the 21-year-old said of his new position. "It’s a bit different from full-back but Sam has done it recently and it gives you a chance to get forward.

"I like getting forward from full-back so I just try to get the ball as much as I can and try to make something happen when I do get it.

"I don’t think there’s a huge difference. I’m quite natural on the left hand-side so it hasn’t been too difficult to adjust.

"There are little things like having your back to goal more, but I’ve just got to adjust to it and keep improving."

Taylor has been ever-present in the team since January’s FA Cup trip to Sunderland, regularly lining up alongside fellow homegrown products Sam Byram, Alex Mowatt and Lewis Cook.

"It’s great to be playing with them," said Taylor. "I’ve played with Sam since I was 11 or 12, and Cookie and Alex more recently.

"Knowing them over the years, it’s great to be playing with them now in the first-team.

On Mowatt’s match-winning strike at Wigan, Taylor added: "It was a great goal.

"I haven’t really seen him score many on his right foot but it was a great strike from him. He’s on fire at the minute and scoring for fun."

Taylor has been a key part of the United side which has enjoyed a drastic upturn in fortunes since the start of 2015, climbing to 13th in the Championship table after winning seven of the last 10 games.

Asked what his aims for the remainder of the campaign are, the youngster replied: "Just to finish as high as we possibly can really.

"From where we were at the turn of the year to where we are now and where we’re looking to get to is a real improvement.

"It could be a great finish to the second half of the season.

"Personally, I’ve thought we’ve been safe for a while but it’s probably mathematically safe now.

"We’ve just got to kick on into that top-half or top 10 and try and get as high as we can."

Mowatt’s 51st-minute effort proved to be the difference on an unforgiving DW Stadium pitch at the weekend, and Taylor feels his side were good value for the three points.

"We ground out the result really in the end," he said. "It was a poor surface but I think we got our tactics right and got the result, which is the most important thing.

"There wasn’t much grass on it and there were a lot of bobbles. It was hard to really get the ball under control but I thought we tried to pass it around and got it going quite a lot of times.

"It wasn’t ideal by any means but we tried to play football. We got our tactics right and once we got the goal, we killed the game off.

"We stuck men behind the ball, everyone was putting their body in there and we ground out the result."
