A GOOD OPPORTUNITY – WALTERS ON AUSTRIA

Young forward discusses pre-season training and his hopes for 2015/16...

Young forward Lewis Walters believes the pre-season training camp presents him with a "good opportunity" as he looks to work his way into the first-team reckoning for 2015/16.

The 20-year-old, a product of United’s Thorp Arch Academy, headed out to Austria on Saturday as part of Uwe Rosler’s 25-man to take on Eintracht Frankfurt before facing Hoffenheim in Norway at the end of the week.

Walters and his team-mates got the training camp underway with a light session just hours after touching base in Austria on Saturday afternoon, and they will continue to be put through their paces with double sessions over the coming days.

"The set-up we’ve got is very good and the training has been very good," he said. "It’ll be a good opportunity.

"We’ve been doing quite a lot of work already.

"This morning’s session was very tough but we had a bit of a break where we could have some lunch and chill for a bit.

"We have training in the afternoon for a bit and then we can do what we want really."

On the training conditions – with temperatures reaching highs of 32 degrees during the day – Walters added: "It’s very hot. Before you even start training, you’re sweating.

"You’ve got to get a lot of water on board, get hydrated and then enjoy the session."

After seeing his 2014/15 hampered by a knee injury picked up during pre-season last year, Walters now has his sights set on completing a full campaign and staking his claim for a place in the team.

"The fitness is the main thing," he said. "I hope to get all of my fitness back and then see more of the ball and work on improving my technique.

"You always want to try and impress. The main thing for me at the minute is to keep fit and progress that way.

"I just want to get through the season. I don’t want to get injured – I can’t do that again. I’ll get the chance to impress if I stay fit.

"I felt like I had a really good opportunity because the manager was showing good signs.

"I thought that I had done well to stay in the team and I hope that I had stayed there, but obviously the injury happened and I couldn’t do anything about it."

Asked about the competition he faces for a senior debut, the youngster said: "There’s a lot of attackers but I can only beat what’s in front of me.

"I’ve got to try my hardest and – hopefully – if I do well enough I’ll get my chance."

Walters is one of seven homegrown members of United’s travelling squad, and the striker believes that a youthful influence makes it easier for those around his age to settle into the group.

"It helps you a lot," he said. "Normally if there’s just one or two it seems like there is a lot of first-teamers with more experience.

"But if there’s a few more of you, it feels like there isn’t as much pressure and you feel more relaxed.

"Mowatt, Sam, Cookie and Charlie Taylor have been great – Kalvin did well to get in last year.

"You’ve always got to hope that you get that chance."
